New guidelines issued during the ESC Congress 2012

The ESC updated three of its guidelines, and released the new guidance during the ESC Congress held in Munich. These documents focus on the management of valvular heart disease, atrial fibrillation, and ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Key new recommendations include those on: indications and contraindications for transcatheter aortic-valve implantation;choice between bioprosthetic and mechanical valves; coordination and organization of STEMI care; antiplatelet therapy for STEMI; novel oral anticoagulants for prevention of thromboembolism in non-valvular atrial fibrillation; catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation. A revised version of the universal definition for myocardial infarction was also released during the congress.
