Dr. Clemens von Birgelen is a Professor of Cardiology at the University of Twente, Enschede, and Co-Director of the Department of Cardiology at Thoraxcentrum Twente, Medisch Spectrum Twente, Enschede.
He obtained his medical degree in at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf, Germany,and was trained as a cardiologist and interventional cardiologist at the University Hospitals of Essen, Germany and Rotterdam, the Netherlands. He defended aPhD thesis at the Erasmus Medical Center and Erasmus University Rotterdam. Dr. von Birgelen has worked as cardiologist and staff member at University Hospital Essen, Germany, before he moved in 2003 to Medisch Spectrum Twente in Enschede, the Netherlands. He is one of the co-founder of Thoraxcentrum Twente, a high-volume, tertiary center for diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases that is located in the eastern part of the Netherlands.
Prof. von Birgelen has a broad range of research interests that include interventional cardiology, coronary imaging, and cardiovascular risk factors. He is the principal investigator of several randomized clinical trials and serves as a reviewer for various medical journals and scientific societies. So far, Dr. von Birgelen has published more than 200 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, including The Lancet, JAMA, Circulation, JACC, and European Heart Journal(ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=von+Birgelen).
