Dr. Carlos Aguiar, MD, FESC, is a staff physician in the Department of Cardiology at Hospital Santa Cruz in Lisbon, Portugal. His clinical interests are focused on atherothrombosis, acute cardiac care, advanced heart failure, and atrial fibrillation.

He received his medical degree from the New University of Lisbon, in 1993, and had his clinical training in Hospital Santa Cruz, Portugal, where he assumed a staff position in 2002.

Dr. Aguiar is Councilor of the Board of the European Society of Cardiology (2014-2016), Vice-President (southwest Europe) of the Cardiology Section of the European Union of Medical Specialists (2013-2017), Chairman of the Working Group on Platelets and Thrombosis of the Portuguese Society of Cardiology (2013-2015), Assistant of the Department of Internal Medicine of the School of Medical Sciences of the New University of Lisbon (since 2012), and Councilor to the Portuguese National Coordination for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Treatment (since 2005). He has been honored for his clinical research, which has focused on ischemic heart disease and advanced heart failure.

He has published several original and review articles in peer-reviewed journals such as the European Heart Journal, Acute Cardiac Care, Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Europace, International Journal of Cardiology, Cardiovascular Ultrasound, Heart, Evidence Based Cardiovascular Medicine, Journal of Nuclear Cardiology, Annals of Noninvasive Electrocardiology, and Revista Portuguesa de Cardiologia. Dr. Aguiar has been invited to present his clinical experience and research at medical symposia and conferences in Europe, South America, Africa, and China.
